Andrea

Andrea is a very good friend who, rather bravely , volunteered to model for a portrait demonstration. Fortunately it was a great success, but she very kindly modelled for me subsequently so that I could take the likeness further. I wanted to convey something of her work, and make her setting more relevant. As an educational psychologist she is a very good listener, she untangles complex situations and finds solutions. I used the darkness of the room through the doorway behind her to suggest this, also the drawn curtain revealing the clarity of the light shining through the coloured glass on the panelled door. This sounds like a contrivance, but it was actually instinctive, and belongs to a tradition of symbolism that began with portraiture itself.
